Summary
Illinois Healthcare and Family Services has issued interim billing guidance for behavioral health providers when submitting claims for multiple units of the same service provided to one patient at different locations on the same day. Providers must use specific consolidated Place of Service (POS) codes when 'rolling up' these claims until system updates are completed.
Action Required
Immediately: Behavioral health billing teams must update claim submission procedures to use consolidated POS codes when billing multiple units of the same service at different locations on the same day. For CMHCs: use POS 53 for multiple on-site locations, POS 99 for multiple off-site locations. For BHCs: use POS 11 for multiple on-site locations, POS 99 for multiple off-site locations. Continue documenting actual POS in patient clinical records. This applies to both HealthChoice Illinois managed care and traditional Medicaid claims.
