Summary
Illinois Medicaid providers are prohibited from separately billing participants for personal protective equipment (PPE) required to perform medical, dental, or non-emergency transportation services. PPE costs must be included in the service billing and cannot be passed to Medicaid participants as the provider must accept Medicaid payment as payment in full.

Immediately: Billing team must ensure no separate charges for PPE (masks, gloves, gowns, etc.) are billed to Illinois Medicaid participants. Review billing practices to confirm PPE costs are absorbed into existing service fees. Update billing staff training to prevent separate PPE billing that violates federal regulations requiring acceptance of Medicaid payment as payment in full.
