Chapter A-200, Handbook for Practitioners Rendering Medical Services Update and Handbook Supplement Update - Claim Submission Policy for Services Rendered by Physician Assistants Effective with Dates of Service on and after July 1, 2020
Illinois Medicaid - HFS·IL·Provider Notice
Effective date
Jul 1, 2020
We identified it
Jun 20, 2026
Summary
Illinois Medicaid now requires physician assistant (PA) services to be billed under the PA's name and NPI as the rendering provider, not the collaborating physician. PAs must be enrolled as rendering providers in the IMPACT system before claims can be processed.
Action Required
Immediately for services from July 1, 2020 forward: Billing team must enroll all PAs as Rendering/Servicing providers in Illinois IMPACT system. Update billing software to use PA's name and NPI as rendering provider instead of collaborating physician for all Illinois Medicaid fee-for-service claims. PA's employer must be listed as billing provider. Claims will not adjudicate without proper PA enrollment.
