Illinois Medicaid now covers services provided by certified veteran support specialists working in Community Mental Health Centers and Behavioral Health Clinics, effective December 1, 2021. These specialists are recognized as Mental Health Professionals and can deliver the same services as other MHPs.

Immediately: Billing teams at Community Mental Health Centers and Behavioral Health Clinics in Illinois should verify veteran support specialist certifications through the Illinois Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Professional Certification Association. Update provider credentialing records to include certified veteran support specialists as Mental Health Professionals. Begin billing for services rendered by these specialists using existing MHP billing codes and fee schedules per the Handbook for Providers of Community-Based Behavioral Services.
