Summary
Maryland Medicaid is proposing to expand personal care services to be available in the workplace, allowing personal care aides to accompany recipients to work and provide assistance with personal care needs that are essential to maintaining employment. The policy also allows nurse practitioners and physician assistants to authorize personal care services, not just physicians.
Action Required
By June 1, 2004: Review proposed amendments if your practice serves Maryland Medicaid recipients who receive personal care services. Providers should prepare to document medical necessity for workplace personal care services and update authorization processes to include nurse practitioners and physician assistants as authorized ordering providers. This is currently a proposed rule in comment period - monitor for final implementation.
