Summary
Effective January 1, 2008, nursing agencies must obtain preauthorization for Rare and Expensive Case Management (REM) optional nursing and home health aide services directly by calling 410-767-1448, replacing the previous written authorization process. The change shifts responsibility from REM case managers to serving nursing agencies for obtaining telephonic preauthorization prior to service delivery.
Action Required
Before January 1, 2008: Nursing agencies serving REM patients must establish process to obtain telephonic preauthorization by calling DONS staff at 410-767-1448 prior to rendering services. Update workflows to ensure preauthorization is obtained for all new cases, hospital discharges, and nursing agency changes. Maintain communication with REM case managers who can be reached at 1-800-565-8190.
