Summary

Maryland Medicaid will now reimburse hospital providers for dialysis services performed in the emergency department, but only when it's a true emergency where the patient cannot be safely sent back to their community dialysis provider. The policy includes specific revenue codes (082X, 083X, 084X, 085X) for billing these emergency dialysis services.

Action Required

Action needed
By July 1, 2013: Billing teams at Maryland hospitals must update their systems to use revenue codes 082X (Hemodialysis), 083X (Peritoneal Dialysis), 084X (CAPD), and 085X (CCPD - not payable) when billing Maryland Medicaid for emergency dialysis services. Ensure documentation clearly demonstrates the emergency nature of the dialysis (patient cannot safely return to community provider). Note that Medicaid will closely monitor these claims to prevent routine dialysis billing in lieu of free-standing facilities.
