Summary
Effective July 1, 2023, Maryland Medicaid discontinues telehealth reimbursement for two services: Registered Nurse Supervisory Visits (staff training/supervision) and Initial/significant change assessments for private duty nursing. Model Waiver Case Management may continue via telehealth when authorized by DONS. Billing teams must immediately cease telehealth billing for the discontinued services to avoid claim denials.
Action Required
By June 30, 2023: Billing team must update billing system and EMR to PROHIBIT telehealth billing for (1) Registered Nurse Supervisory Visits and (2) Initial and significant change assessments for private duty nursing services. Notify all nursing staff and providers that these services must be delivered in-person only. Remove telehealth modifiers from these service codes in billing templates. Update internal compliance checklist. Flag any pending telehealth claims for these services for manual review and resubmission as in-person visits. Confirm Model Waiver Case Management telehealth billing remains active only when DONS authorization is documented. Claims submitted with telehealth modifiers for prohibited services will be denied by Maryland Medicaid.
