Summary
Effective January 1, 2025, new AMA evaluation and management telemedicine service codes have been established for billing telehealth visits. These codes function similarly to office visits but require communication-based technology and are based on medical decision making level or total time spent.
Action Required
Immediately: Billing team must review and implement the revised Clinical Payment and Coding Policy CPCP033 for telemedicine services. Update billing software to include new AMA telemedicine E&M codes effective Jan 1, 2025. Train staff on proper code selection based on medical decision making or time documentation. Update encounter forms and EMR templates to capture required telemedicine-specific documentation.
