Summary

Effective March 1, 2020, Pennsylvania Medicaid now allows physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, and podiatrists to prescribe home health services, medical supplies, equipment and appliances during the COVID-19 public health emergency. This expands the types of practitioners who can order these services beyond just physicians.

Action Required

Action needed
Immediately: Update billing workflows to accept home health service orders from PAs, CRNPs, CNMs, and podiatrists for Pennsylvania Medicaid patients. Train billing staff to recognize these practitioners as valid prescribers for home health services, nursing services, home health aide services, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, audiology services, and medical supplies/equipment. Update prior authorization processes if applicable to include these expanded prescriber types.
