Summary
Pennsylvania Medicaid is implementing new prior authorization requirements for topical antipsoriatic medications, including aryl hydrocarbon receptor agonists and PDE4 inhibitors. Providers must now demonstrate therapeutic failure or contraindication to topical corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors before these specialty medications can be approved.
Action Required
By January 9, 2023: Providers treating psoriasis must update prior authorization procedures for topical antipsoriatic medications. Document therapeutic failures or contraindications to 4-week topical corticosteroid trials and 8-week topical calcineurin inhibitor trials before prescribing topical AhR agonists or PDE4 inhibitors. Update EMR templates to capture required documentation elements including FDA-approved indications, age appropriateness, and contraindications. Staff should review Pennsylvania PDL for preferred topical antipsoriatics to minimize prior authorization delays.
