Summary
Pennsylvania Medical Assistance has removed mandatory training requirements for physicians, PAs, and CRNPs to provide topical fluoride varnish services using procedure code 99188. Training is now encouraged but optional, eliminating a previous barrier to providing these preventive dental services to Medicaid beneficiaries under age 21.
Action Required
Immediately: Notify Pennsylvania providers that mandatory topical fluoride varnish training is no longer required to bill procedure code 99188 for Medicaid patients under 21. Update internal procedures to reflect that training certification submission to the Department is eliminated. Optional training through Smiles for Life course remains available.
