Summary
When a hospital changes ownership during a patient's inpatient stay, the hospital that owned the facility on the admission date must submit the entire claim using their NPI, regardless of when ownership transferred. Payment is not split between the old and new owners.
Action Required
Immediately: Hospital billing teams must verify that claims for patients with stays spanning ownership changes are billed under the NPI of the entity that owned the facility on the admission date. Update billing procedures to ensure the admitting facility's NPI is used for the entire stay, not split between owners.
