Summary
Michigan Medicaid changed ambulance billing requirements to allow fractional mileage reporting (rounded to nearest tenth for trips under 100 miles) and updated payment rules for cases where patients are pronounced dead during or after ambulance services.
Action Required
By June 1, 2017: Ambulance billing teams in Michigan must update billing systems to report mileage in tenths (e.g., 15.3 miles) for trips under 100 miles, rounded up to nearest tenth. For trips 100+ miles, continue using whole miles. Update billing procedures for death pronouncement scenarios - bill BLS rate without mileage if pronounced dead after ambulance called but before transport, or full medically necessary rate if pronounced dead after transport to hospital.
