Summary

Michigan Medicaid updated requirements for physician assistant (PA) services coverage. PAs must now be enrolled as Rendering/Servicing-Only providers in CHAMPS with Individual NPIs and maintain valid practice agreements with Medicaid-enrolled physicians. Claims must include PA NPI in Rendering Provider field and supervising physician NPI in Supervising Provider field.

Action Required

Action needed
Immediately for Michigan practices: 1) Ensure all PAs providing services to Medicaid patients are enrolled in CHAMPS as Rendering/Servicing-Only providers with Individual NPIs. 2) Update billing system to require PA NPI in Rendering Provider field and supervising physician NPI in Supervising Provider field on all PA claims. 3) Verify all PAs have valid practice agreements with Medicaid-enrolled physicians and maintain copies on-site. 4) Update PA enrollment to associate with participating physician NPIs in CHAMPS. Claims will not be reimbursed without proper PA enrollment and NPI reporting.
