Summary
Michigan's Medicaid program has temporarily waived several Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) requirements during COVID-19, including eliminating the least costly transportation mode requirement and allowing verbal attestation for Medical Transportation Statements. The changes also allow submission of transportation forms via email and fax, and suspend prior approval requirements for Children's Special Health Care Services travel.
Action Required
Immediately: Update billing workflows to accept Medical Transportation Statement forms (MSA-4674) via telephone with verbal attestation instead of requiring written signatures. Configure systems to accept DHS-5330 and MSA-4674 forms via email and fax. For CSHCS patients, allow travel approval requests to be submitted after travel has taken place rather than requiring prior approval. Train staff that least costly transportation mode requirements are waived - can authorize higher-cost transportation if it's the only available option.
