Summary
Michigan Medicaid now allows pharmacists, RNs, and LPNs to order COVID-19 tests at community testing locations, and permits pharmacies to enroll as independent clinical laboratories to perform COVID-19 testing. This expands who can order tests and where they can be performed for Medicaid beneficiaries.
Action Required
Immediately: Update billing system to accept COVID-19 test orders from pharmacists (using their individual NPI), RNs, and LPNs (using supervising physician's NPI) in the Ordering Provider field. Pharmacies wanting to perform lab testing must obtain CLIA certification and modify CHAMPS enrollment to add 'Clinical Laboratory' specialty. All lab claims must include CLIA number. Use specified COVID-19 testing codes U0001-U0004, 86328, 86769, and 87635 for billing.
