Summary
Michigan Medicaid now covers dental services provided by licensed dental therapists starting October 1, 2022. Dental therapists must enroll as Medicaid providers with individual NPIs and maintain written practice agreements with supervising dentists.
Action Required
For practices employing dental therapists: Complete online CHAMPS enrollment application with Type 1 NPI, associate with supervising dentist's NPI in system, maintain valid written practice agreement at primary practice location, and ensure agreement includes effective date and review dates. Update billing system to process dental therapist claims through associated Type 2 entity NPI only.
