Summary
Michigan Medicaid updated the requirements for which provider types can be listed as the attending provider on hospital claims (UB-04 form). For inpatient claims, only physicians, podiatrists, oral/maxillofacial surgeons, dentists, and certified nurse midwives are allowed, while outpatient claims have different requirements based on the service type.
Action Required
Immediately: Billing team must review all Michigan Medicaid hospital claims to ensure the attending provider field (FL 76) on UB-04 forms contains only approved provider types. For inpatient claims, verify attending providers are MDs/DOs, podiatrists, oral/maxillofacial surgeons, dentists, or certified nurse midwives. Update billing system edits and staff training accordingly. Claims with non-compliant attending provider designations may be denied.
