Summary
Michigan Medicaid is expanding dental sealant coverage for beneficiaries under age 21 to include primary molars and permanent premolars, in addition to existing permanent molar coverage. Sealants are covered once every three years with repair and replacement included, but surfaces must be free from caries and restorations.
Action Required
By January 1, 2023: Billing teams at dental practices must update their systems to include coverage for dental sealants on primary molars (A, B, I, J, K, L, S, T) and permanent premolars (4, 5, 12, 13, 20, 21, 28, 29) for Michigan Medicaid beneficiaries under age 21. Verify surfaces are free from caries and restorations before billing. Update billing frequency limits to once every three years per tooth.
