Summary
Michigan Medicaid is continuing COVID-19 laboratory coverage policies after the public health emergency ends, but will discontinue higher reimbursement rates for high-throughput COVID-19 tests (codes U0003, U0004, U0005) effective May 12, 2023. Most other COVID-19 testing coverage and specimen collection reimbursement continues through September 30, 2024.
Action Required
By May 12, 2023: Stop billing HCPCS codes U0003, U0004, and U0005 for high-throughput COVID-19 testing for Michigan Medicaid patients. Stop using code G2023 for specimen collection. For independent labs collecting COVID-19 specimens from homebound patients, use CPT 99001 with diagnosis codes Z20.822 or Z11.52 instead. Update billing system to reflect standard laboratory reimbursement rates for COVID-19 testing. Review Laboratory fee screen database on MDHHS website for current covered codes and rates.
