Summary
Starting August 1, 2024, Michigan Medicaid and MIChild will provide full coverage to lawfully residing pregnant women (through pregnancy and 12-month postpartum period) and lawfully residing children (until age 21) under the CHIPRA Section 214 state plan option. After these periods end, coverage reverts to Emergency Services Only (ESO) if applicable.
Action Required
By August 1, 2024: Billing team must update patient eligibility verification procedures to identify lawfully residing pregnant women and children under age 21 who qualify for full Medicaid/MIChild coverage rather than limited ESO coverage. Update insurance verification scripts and train front desk staff to properly verify expanded coverage eligibility. Ensure claims are submitted under full coverage rather than emergency-only benefits for qualifying patients.
