Summary
Michigan Medicaid is implementing MichiCANS (Michigan Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths tool) to replace CAFAS scores for determining Serious Emotional Disturbance Waiver (SEDW) eligibility. The new assessment tool will be required for behavioral health services eligibility determination and referrals.
Action Required
By October 1, 2024: Providers serving pediatric behavioral health patients must ensure MichiCANS Comprehensive reviews are completed instead of CAFAS scores for SEDW eligibility determination. Update patient assessment workflows to use MichiCANS tool through local Community Mental Health Services Program (CMHSP).
