Summary
Michigan Medicaid now requires behavioral health providers (PIHPs, CMHSPs, CCBHCs, and MHPs) to accept and utilize existing MichiCANS Screener and Comprehensive assessments completed by certified raters from other Michigan child-serving systems. This eliminates duplicate screening processes and requires integration of existing assessment data into EHR systems.
Action Required
By October 1, 2025: Billing and clinical teams at Michigan behavioral health practices must update workflows to accept existing MichiCANS Screener and Comprehensive ratings from other certified Michigan child-serving systems. Update EHR systems to accommodate imported MichiCANS data and train staff to review and integrate existing assessments rather than conducting duplicate screenings. Ensure children discharged from outpatient services within one year are not required to repeat screening processes.
