Summary
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has adopted the National Provider Identifier (NPI), a new 10-digit number that will replace all payer-specific identification numbers on electronic transactions. Providers can begin applying for NPIs starting May 23, 2005, and must use them for all electronic transactions beginning May 23, 2007.
Action Required
By May 23, 2007: All healthcare providers must obtain a 10-digit National Provider Identifier (NPI) and use it for all electronic transactions. Beginning May 23, 2005: Start the NPI application process through the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) at www.cms.hhs.gov/medlearn/npi/. Billing team must: identify all systems and processes that will be affected by NPI implementation, communicate with billing services and clearinghouses about NPI requirements, and prepare to update billing software to include NPI numbers on all electronic claims and transactions. Wisconsin Medicaid is not yet accepting NPI on transactions - watch for future updates on implementation dates.
