Wisconsin Medicaid will not implement the National Provider Identifier (NPI) on May 23, 2007, and providers must continue using their eight-digit Medicaid provider numbers for all claims and transactions. Claims submitted without the required eight-digit Medicaid provider number will be denied.

On and after May 23, 2007: Billing team must continue using eight-digit Wisconsin Medicaid provider numbers on all electronic and paper claims, prior authorizations, and other transactions submitted to Wisconsin Medicaid. Do not rely on NPI for processing. Update billing software and staff procedures to ensure the eight-digit Medicaid number is always included. Claims without the eight-digit provider number will be denied.
