Summary
Wisconsin Medicaid now requires all healthcare providers to obtain and submit National Provider Identifiers (NPIs) to replace existing Medicaid provider numbers for billing transactions. Certain non-healthcare providers like personal care, blood banks, and specialized medical vehicle providers are exempt unless they also provide healthcare services.
Action Required
Immediately: All Wisconsin Medicaid-certified healthcare providers must obtain an NPI at https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/NPPES/Welcome.do and submit it to Wisconsin Medicaid. Billing team must prepare to update all claim submissions to use NPIs instead of Medicaid provider numbers once full implementation occurs. Providers with multiple certifications must use NPIs for all transactions. Failure to comply will prevent processing of Medicaid claims.
