Summary

Wisconsin Medicaid and BadgerCare Plus will begin accepting National Provider Identifier (NPI) numbers on electronic transactions starting May 19, 2008, in addition to existing Medicaid provider numbers. Providers must report their NPI to BadgerCare Plus before using it on claims, and must include specific taxonomy codes and ZIP+4 codes with NPI submissions to avoid claim denials.

Action Required

Action needed
Before May 19, 2008: All providers must report their NPI to BadgerCare Plus immediately using the Web-based application at dhfs.wisconsin.gov/medicaid/ if they plan to use NPI on electronic transactions. Billing team must update electronic claims to include required taxonomy codes and ZIP+4 codes when submitting NPI. Continue using Medicaid provider numbers for all paper claims, prior authorizations, and other business functions until October 2008. Failure to report NPI before using it will result in claim denials or processing delays.
