Summary
Healthcare providers must transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 coding systems, with Version 5010 transaction standards required by January 1, 2012 and ICD-10 codes mandatory for all services starting October 1, 2013. Claims using ICD-9 codes for services provided on or after October 1, 2013 will not be paid.
Action Required
By January 1, 2012: Contact software vendor to upgrade billing system to Version 5010 transaction standards to accommodate ICD-10 code structure. By October 1, 2013: Billing team must update all systems to use ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes for all claims. Train staff on new 7-character ICD-10 coding system. Failure to implement will result in claim payment denials for all services provided after October 1, 2013.
