Summary
BCBS Mississippi updated their Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP) policy requiring prior authorization for multiple ITP medications including IVIG products, rituximab biosimilars, eltrombopag (Promacta), and fostamatinib (Tavalisse). Several medications are now considered not medically necessary including Doptelet, Wayrilz, and brand-name Rituxan.
Action Required
Immediately: Billing team must verify prior authorization is obtained before prescribing or administering any ITP medications listed in this policy. Update billing system to flag these medications for PA requirement. Ensure formulary drug searches are performed on patient member IDs before prescribing. Claims will be denied without proper prior authorization.
