Summary
Oregon Medicaid now requires case-by-case prior authorization for safety beds (enclosed beds) with strict documentation requirements including proof that less restrictive interventions failed, specialized caregiver training, monitoring plans, and mental health management plans. Oregon Department of Human Services will not approve safety beds under K Plan and waiver authorities due to their restrictive nature.
Action Required
Immediately: Billing team must implement prior authorization requirements for all safety bed requests for Oregon Medicaid patients. Update system to flag these requests and require documentation of: 1) failed less restrictive interventions, 2) FDA approval for appropriate setting, 3) caregiver training completion (patient responsibility), 4) written monitoring plan, 5) mental health management plan, and 6) transition plan away from safety bed. Submit requests to EPSDT.info@odhsoha.oregon.gov. Claims will be denied without proper prior authorization.
