Summary
Health Net requires hospitals to provide interpreter services for members with limited English proficiency or hearing impairments, but hospitals cannot use minors as interpreters or require members to bring their own interpreters. If hospitals cannot provide interpreter support, they must contact Health Net directly using the number on the member's ID card.
Action Required
Immediately: Hospital billing and front desk staff must ensure compliance with language assistance requirements. Contact Health Net at the number on member ID cards when interpreter services are needed. Document in medical records when emergency circumstances require use of attending adults as interpreters. Staff cannot use minors as interpreters except in documented emergencies or ask members to bring their own interpreters. All providers should complete cultural competency training through the Office of Minority Health.
