Summary

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas is excluding multiple brand-name drugs from coverage effective October 1, 2025, directing members to generic alternatives or preferred brands. This includes common medications (BRILINTA, APTIOM, QSYMIA), diabetes testing supplies (OneTouch products), and specialty drugs. Changes apply to Balanced, Performance, and Performance Select drug lists but NOT to Annual plans until January 1, 2026. Billing teams must update claim edits to deny coverage for excluded drugs and educate providers on alternatives.

Action Required

Action needed
By September 15, 2025: Billing team must update pharmacy claim system to deny claims for all excluded drugs listed (BRILINTA, APTIOM, QSYMIA, SOOLANTRA, PURIXAN, NAMZARIC, TARPEYO, and all OneTouch diabetes testing strips/solutions). Implement automatic rejection rules for Balanced, Performance, and Performance Select plans. Create provider communication summarizing excluded drugs and preferred alternatives by specialty (cardiology for BRILINTA, neurology for APTIOM, endocrinology for diabetes supplies, etc.). Before October 1, 2025: Front desk staff must update patient education materials and website to reflect exclusions. Alert providers that claims for these excluded drugs will be denied; patients must use generic equivalents or preferred brands listed in alternatives column. Consequences: Claims submitted without using approved alternatives will be denied at point-of-sale, creating patient access issues and provider frustration. Note: These changes do NOT apply to Annual plans (Basic Annual, Enhanced Annual, Performance Annual) until January 1, 2026; maintain separate claim logic for those members.
