Summary
AB 665 removes parental consent requirements for minors ages 12 and over seeking outpatient mental health treatment in California, effective July 1, 2024. Mental health professionals can now treat minors without demonstrating risk of harm and can consult with minors before involving parents if appropriate.
Action Required
Immediately: Update intake forms and consent procedures for minors ages 12+ seeking mental health services. Train front desk staff that parental consent is no longer required for these services. Update EMR templates to reflect expanded definition of qualified mental health professionals including psychological assistants, trainees, and interns.
