Summary
Starting January 1, 2025, California Assembly Bill 2129 allows separate billing for IUDs, contraceptive implants, and related services provided immediately after childbirth under Medi-Cal coverage. These contraceptive devices and services can no longer be bundled with general obstetric procedures and must be billed separately.
Action Required
By January 1, 2025: Billing team must update system to allow separate billing for immediate postpartum IUDs, contraceptive implants, and related professional services for Medi-Cal patients delivering in general acute care hospitals or licensed birth centers in Fresno, Kings, and Madera counties. Stop bundling these contraceptive services with obstetric procedure payments. Update encounter forms and train staff on new separate billing requirements.
