Summary
Health Net/CalViva Health requires hospitals to use their Language Assistance Program (LAP) for members with limited English proficiency, hearing impairments, or diverse cultural backgrounds in California counties. Hospitals cannot ask members to bring their own interpreters or use minors to interpret, and must contact the number on member ID cards if interpreter support is needed.
Action Required
Immediately: Front desk and clinical staff must stop asking members to bring their own interpreters or using minors for interpretation. When interpreter services are needed for Health Net/CalViva members, call the number on the member's ID card to access the Language Assistance Program. Update patient intake procedures to include language assistance verification. Document any emergency use of attending adults as interpreters in the medical record with justification.
