Summary
Assembly Bill 2132, effective January 1, 2025, requires California primary care providers to offer tuberculosis screening to adult patients with identified risk factors if covered by insurance. Providers must offer follow-up care or refer patients who test positive for latent TB infection.
Action Required
Immediately: Primary care providers must implement TB risk assessment screening for all adult Medi-Cal patients during routine visits. Use California TB risk assessment tool to identify at-risk patients. For positive risk factors, offer IGRA testing (T-SPOT.TB or QuantiFERON-Gold Plus). Before treating LTBI, rule out active TB with symptom screen and chest X-ray. Providers must offer follow-up care or refer patients who test positive. Update clinical workflows to include TB screening protocols. Failure to comply with AB 2132 requirements may result in regulatory violations.
