Summary
California's Medi-Cal program has eliminated the requirement for written provider recommendations for Community Health Worker services, allowing providers to now make verbal referrals. Eligible Medi-Cal patients can directly access CHW services through Member Services or online directories without prior written authorization.

Immediately: Front desk and clinical staff should inform eligible Medi-Cal patients that they can directly access Community Health Worker services by calling Member Services or using the online Provider Directory. Update patient education materials to reflect that verbal recommendations are now sufficient - no written referrals needed. This applies to patients with chronic conditions, social needs, frequent ED visits, or missed appointments.
