Summary

Connecticut Medicaid now allows certified pharmacists to prescribe and dispense naloxone (Narcan) directly to patients, with specific billing requirements for submitting pharmacist NPIs as prescribing providers. Only select naloxone products are covered, and auxiliary products like breathing masks are excluded.

Action Required

Action needed
By March 30, 2016: Billing team must update system to accept pharmacist NPIs as prescribing providers for naloxone claims submitted to Connecticut Medicaid. Ensure only covered naloxone products (Narcan 4mg Nasal Spray NDC 69547-0353-02 and covered naloxone syringes) are billed. Do not submit claims for nasal atomization devices or Evzio when prescribed by pharmacists as these will be denied.
