Summary

Connecticut Medicaid updated their Preferred Drug List (PDL) effective January 1, 2019, with changes to preferred and non-preferred medications. New billing clarifications allow pharmacies to use DAW codes 5 or 9 for preferred brand medications without requiring prior authorization, while non-preferred drugs continue to require PA with temporary supply options.

Action Required

Action needed
By January 1, 2019: Billing team must update pharmacy billing procedures for Connecticut Medicaid patients to use DAW codes 5 or 9 when dispensing preferred brand medications instead of DAW code 1. Train staff on new 14-day temporary supply override process using all 9's in Prior Authorization Number field (NCPDP 462-EV) and numeric value '1' in Prior Authorization Type field (NCPDP 461-EU). Update prior authorization workflows to include new web-based PA system at www.ctdssmap.com. Claims for non-preferred medications without proper PA will be denied.
