Summary

Connecticut Medicaid has updated its Preferred Drug List effective July 1, 2019, with changes to preferred and non-preferred medications. Non-preferred drugs now require prior authorization, but pharmacies can dispense a one-time 14-day supply while PA is being obtained, and there's clarification on billing requirements for preferred brand name medications.

Action Required

Action needed
By July 1, 2019: Review the updated Connecticut Medicaid Preferred Drug List at www.ctdssmap.com and identify any commonly prescribed medications that moved to non-preferred status. Update prior authorization workflows to account for new PA requirements for non-preferred drugs. Train staff on the 14-day temporary supply option (using all 9's in PA field NCPDP 462-EV and numeric '1' in NCPDP 461-EU) and 5-day emergency supply process. Update billing procedures to use DAW codes 5 or 9 for preferred brand medications instead of DAW 1 unless medically necessary documentation exists.
