Summary
Connecticut Medicaid (CMAP) has updated billing guidance for audio-only behavioral health services during COVID-19, replacing telephone assessment codes 98967-98968 with standard psychotherapy codes 90791-90838, plus office visit codes 99201-99215, all requiring modifier CR. These services are now reimbursed at the same rate as in-person visits when provided via telephone only.
Action Required
Immediately for Connecticut Medicaid: Stop billing codes 98967 and 98968 for telephone behavioral health services as of May 6, 2020. Starting May 7, 2020: Use standard psychotherapy codes (90791-90838) and office visit codes (99201-99215) with modifier CR appended to all audio-only behavioral health claims. Update billing system to automatically add CR modifier for telephonic behavioral health services. Train billing team that these services will be paid at same rate as in-person visits during COVID-19 emergency period.
