Summary
Effective January 1, 2021, telemedicine claims should no longer use Place of Service (POS) code 02. Instead, providers must use the POS code that best describes where the service would have been provided if performed in-person.
Action Required
Immediately: Billing team must stop using POS 02 for all telemedicine claims. Update billing software to automatically assign the appropriate POS code based on where the service would have been rendered in-person (e.g., POS 11 for office visits, POS 22 for outpatient hospital). Review and update encounter forms and billing templates to reflect correct POS coding for telemedicine services.
