Summary

Connecticut Medicaid now allows non-physician practitioners (PAs, APRNs, CNMs) and supervising physicians to combine their distinct face-to-face and non-face-to-face time when determining the level of service for shared/split medical visits. This change follows 2021 CPT manual guidance and is effective retroactively to January 1, 2021.

Action Required

Action needed
Immediately: Billing team must review shared/split medical visits with NPPs and physicians from January 1, 2021 forward to determine if higher-level E&M codes can be billed by combining distinct time spent by both providers. Update billing procedures to include time documentation requirements for shared visits. Ensure only distinct time is counted - when providers see patient together, count only one provider's time.
