Connecticut Medicaid is reinstating face-to-face requirements for certain durable medical equipment (DME) effective May 12, 2023, following the end of the public health emergency. Additionally, physiatrists can now conduct assessments for customized wheelchairs via telemedicine when a physical or occupational therapist is present in-person with the patient in nursing facilities.

Action Required

Action needed
By May 12, 2023: Medical equipment providers must ensure face-to-face encounters are documented for DME items listed on the Medicare DMEPOS face-to-face requirements list (reference CMS website provided). Update physiatrist assessment procedures to allow telemedicine visits for customized wheelchair evaluations in nursing facilities, but ensure PT/OT remains in-person with patient. Review PB 17-19 and PB 2023-18 for specific telehealth requirements. Claims may be denied without proper face-to-face documentation.
