Summary

Connecticut Medicaid updated their Preferred Drug List (PDL) effective July 1, 2023, with changes to preferred and non-preferred medications. Non-preferred drugs now require prior authorization, but pharmacists can dispense one-time 14-day supplies while PA is being obtained, and there are specific billing requirements for preferred brand name medications.

Action Required

Action needed
Immediately: Billing team must verify Connecticut Medicaid PDL changes at www.ctdssmap.com under Pharmacy Information → Preferred Drug List Information. Update billing system to flag non-preferred medications requiring prior authorization. Train staff on new 14-day temporary supply override using all 9's in Prior Authorization Number field (NCPDP 462-EV) and numeric value '1' in Prior Authorization Type field (NCPDP 461-EU). Update DAW code billing: use DAW '5' or '9' for preferred brand medications instead of DAW '1' unless medically necessary documentation exists. Failure to obtain proper authorization will result in claim denials.
