Beginning January 1, 2024, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) can now enroll as Medicare providers and bill Medicare Part B independently. For dual-eligible clients, Medicare becomes the primary payer and providers must submit crossover claims with Medicare payment information included.

Action Required

Action needed
By April 1, 2024: LPCs and LMFTs must complete Medicare enrollment or claims will be denied. Immediately for dual-eligible clients: Submit crossover claims with Medicare as primary payer, including Medicare payment information on claims. Billing team must update system to handle secondary Medicaid billing for Medicare-enrolled LPC/LMFT providers. Providers who are retroactively enrolled in Medicare must recoup previous Medicaid claims and resubmit to Medicare for processing.
