Summary
New Jersey is implementing the Vaccines for Children (VFC) federal program to provide free vaccines to eligible pediatric populations (Medicaid-eligible, uninsured, Native American/Alaskan, and underinsured children). Due to federal government changes in the distribution model, New Jersey must develop its own storage and distribution system, causing implementation delays for certain providers. Existing Medicaid vaccine regulations will continue during this transition period.
Action Required
Immediately: Pediatric preventive health providers should be aware that the VFC program enrollment timeline has been delayed pending New Jersey's development of state-level vaccine storage and distribution infrastructure. Providers currently receiving free vaccine from the New Jersey Department of Health will be contacted directly by the Department of Health Immunization Program for immediate enrollment instructions. Billing teams should monitor communications from the Department of Health and CDC regarding enrollment requirements and vaccine billing procedures once the state distribution system is operational. No immediate billing workflow changes are required at this time; continue following existing Medicaid regulations for pediatric vaccine coverage.
