Summary
New Jersey Medicaid is replacing old nail debridement codes (11700, 11701, 11710, 11711) with two new HCPCS codes (11720, 11721) effective January 1, 1997, with a transition period ending May 31, 1997. Billing teams must update systems to use the new codes based on the number of nails debridged (1-5 vs. 6 or more) and apply the new fee allowances.
Action Required
By May 31, 1997: Billing team must stop billing HCPCS codes 11700, 11701, 11710, and 11711 for New Jersey Medicaid claims. Update billing software to recognize and bill only HCPCS codes 11720 (1-5 nails) and 11721 (6+ nails) for all nail debridement services with service dates on or after January 1, 1997. Update fee schedules to reflect new maximum allowances: 11720 = $13.00 (specialist) / $11.00 (non-specialist); 11721 = $21.00 (specialist) / $18.00 (non-specialist). Train podiatry providers and billers to select the correct code based on number of nails treated. Ensure encounter forms and templates prompt for nail count documentation. Claims submitted with old codes after May 31, 1997 will be denied.
