Summary
New Jersey Medicaid, NJ KidCare, and General Assistance programs now require identity verification when non-beneficiaries pick up prescriptions exceeding $75. Pharmacies must obtain either the beneficiary's Medicaid/NJ KidCare card or current GA check stub, or acceptable personal identification from the picker, and maintain photocopies for fraud prevention purposes.

By May 15, 1998: Pharmacy providers must implement the following workflow for all New Jersey Medicaid, NJ KidCare, and GA pharmacy claims: (1) When a non-beneficiary picks up a prescription with charges exceeding $75.00, require presentation of the beneficiary's Medicaid card, NJ KidCare card, or current month's GA check stub; (2) If these documents are not available, accept acceptable personal identification (driver's license, motor vehicle registration, Social Security card, credit card, etc.) from the individual picking up the prescription OR require the beneficiary to pick it up in person; (3) Pharmacy staff must maintain photocopies of all identification documents presented with claims. Failure to follow this procedure may result in claim denials and investigation for fraud or abuse. Update pharmacy dispensing procedures and staff training materials accordingly.
